Our History
Nikken was established in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1973, with the vision of offering a better quality of life. The first product inspiration came from the bumpy floor surface of traditional Japanese hot baths, designed to stimulate the soles of the feet, and the KenkoInsoles® were born.
The name of the business, NIKKEN, is a blend of two Japanese words with special meanings;
• Nihon – Japan
• Kenko – Health
1980’s
Tom Watanabe joined Nikken Japan originally as Director of Training before becoming Head of North American Operations when Nikken moved into the US five years later. Watanabe could see Nikken and its growing range of products making a difference to lives – and so Nikken USA begins operations.
1990’s
Watanabe becomes President and CEO and the Wellness concept was spread across the US into Canada…and then into Mexico.
Nikken began operations in Europe from its Milton Keynes Headquarters in the United Kingdom, with Anthony Chaplin joining to establish European operations. The company opened from a small base but quickly spread across national boundaries. By the end of the 1990s Nikken had also expanded into Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Finland, France and Ireland
New products were also added as Nikken continued to spread across the globe. This decade saw the exclusively-designed $66 million Nikken headquarters reaching completion in the newly developed Irvine Spectrum area of Southern California.
